We were there for only two nights but we’re gonna miss Hiroshima (if not their oysters). But we did pick a good time to leave: the G7 is coming to visit and all the city seems to be locking down. The Peace Park has police all over the place, they are locking all the train station lockers, etc.
Today is a long day’s journey, but with a nice long break for lunch. I’d never even heard of it, but it turns out that Nagoya is the third largest population center of Japan, with over ten million people in its metro area.
We arrived in Nagoya at 12:25, famished for lunch. I can’t remember the figure Robert told me, but Nagoya has one of the largest train stations in the world (or something like that), anyway we found a great place to eat on the twelfth floor of the train station!
Takayama is a much much smaller town, well off the normal tourist trail. Of the three big Japanese beef varieties, we are here to finally sample the last one (known as “Hida”). We are on a much smaller and slower train now, but as it ambles by rivers and winds gradually up into the low mountains, we are very much enjoying the views.
Immediately after checking in, we raced to get into one of the best local Hida beef restaurants.
It is literally endless. I forgot to even photograph the inevitable noodle course lol but wow was everything good!! Now we are absolutely stuffed & bloated & considering not eating at all tomorrow (yeah right) but despite our current discomfiture this was a meal to remember for sure.
