We woke up this morning in Cincinnati, now we are looking for dinner in Rome! Travel days are just so bizarre! They are wonderful, but still so tiring and so strange… anyway, we headed out for a late dinner somewhere.
This looks promising!!“Pic taken five seconds before being run over” is what I was thinking at the time… I should really take out a life-insurance policy before returning to ItalyIt’s the end of February, and Rome is pretty chilly still. But Italians have a passion for eating outside, so here we are, perched under a heat lamp… it’s probably about 45 degrees outFirst meal in Italy!First wine of the trip–sadly, we didn’t know anything about Umbrian wines yetWe sat by the nicest couple, on vacation from Austria. We had a great conversation, and they took our picture for us–notice how bundled up we are! I should have asked for a video clip so you could see us shivering 😀Dinner was really solid–trip is off to a great start!!Sam is determined to order out of her comfort zone–these are ox-tailsRandom store frontsThen we found this crazy gelato store: that brown “wall” to the right is actually molten chocolate endlessly pouring down
For whatever reason, I have always been anti-Rome. Last time we visited (albeit at least twenty years ago) I thought it was unbearable crowded, hot, noisy, dirty, and uncomfortable. It could be that the city has greatly changed, but it’s more likely that I have recently spent so much time in Athens, Sicily, and Naples that I have learned what an actual dirty & grimy city looks like!
This time around, I found Rome to be almost calm, reasonably clean, full of great food and great monuments. I quickly became a huge fan of the place!
Sam with her ice-cream in front of Trajan’s column (FWIW this was the model for the column in Paris’s Place Vendome)Some random fountain, things like this are literally everywhere and no one pays any attention to them…Then we randomly stumbled upon the Trevi Fountain! So beautiful at night, and almost no one here!We finally meandered our way back to the hotelJust in time for a grappa nightcap at the bar before finally finally finally heading up to bed, wow these first days are exhausting!
