Let’s hope people enjoy this blog for the pictures rather than the unimaginative post titles!! Anyway, it was Saturday so we decided to wonder around to a new part of town… Todi is really tiny but somehow there is always an area we haven’t yet been to.
This ancient tree fascinated me, I figured it was an old olive tree, but do they even bloom like this?? I still don’t know…A *very* steep street leading down and out of the city… notice the ornate stone street sign at the upper right
Suddenly we stumbled upon this amazing church! Cost two euros to get into, it’s nickname is “The Sistine Chapel of Todi” and you can kinda see why! It’s actual name is Church of the Nunziatina.
We still seek The Grail!!!!!My back hurts just thinking about painting any of this lolMeanwhile, back on the streets… haha earlier I saw a kid in a hoodie which read “Thug Life” 😂 yeah that’s pretty much Todi in a nutshellOut in the Piazza Popolo, these were our first outside cafe beers of the entire cold trip! It’s a balmy 62 out so we weren’t going to waste the rare opportunity
So remember the restaurant Pane y Vino, where Sam was served the crazy bird drenched in puke (which she returned, with interest!)? With the old lady (Nonna) watching our every move, making sure we were eating what was served? Well, lately we have been seeing her everywhere (always with a lit cigarette dangling). She’s in stores, she’s in cafes, she’s walking up and down our street!! Talk about a guilt trip!! Turns out she lives within a block or two from us lol which was a relief to discover: Sam figured she was stalking us! Cause seriously, there is no greater insult to an Italian to not eat everything that came our of their kitchen.
Eventually, we decided to go back to her restaurant, as a sort of gastronomical exorcism.
The pasta with wild asparagus was pretty greatAnd I tried the wild boar here for the first timeAnd there she is!! The dark standing figure over my shoulder at the top of the stairs, I’d recognize the sound of those footsteps anywhere!! Hah we’re on great terms now however, she always says “ciao” to us both, we’re all good, it’s just still kinda scary when she appears somewhere totally unexpectedDessert was off the hook, some sort of caramel thingie.
End of lunch was hysterical: we go downstairs to pay, and somehow our waiter and the owner get their wires crossed… our waiter comes by with what appears to be two complimentary drinks, he smiles and presses them upon us, we’re thinking wow this is nice! Then the owner whisks by, “no, no!” and literally plucks them from our fingers so he can go present them to someone else 😂 The look on Sam’s face, with her empty hand still poised next to her open mouth 😂😂😂
Heading back home after lunch, I just can’t resist posting this view for the millionth timeBuilt in the thirteenth century, it still just boggles the mind… Chiesa di San FortunatoFor dinner it was the Warm Pizza Restaurant (Pizzeria Cavour)!! Can’t remember the last time we were this warm & comfortable! I actually felt confident enough to remove my thick black thermal top!Dinner of simple pizzas hit the spot Today is when we finally climbed the bell tower… I know I already blogged about it, but it’s still pretty coolTo get the scale of this place, look at the tiny railing at the bottom, and the tiny doorway at the end of it….Just in time for lunch! Bizarre chicken for Sam, scrawny rabbit for me.
Back home in Cincinnati we have a favorite Indian restaurant, and it is randomly inhabited by someone we refer to as “Angry Chef.” You order a meal one day, and it’s fine… you order it again, and it rips off your face, that’s how we know Angry Chef is there. Here in Italy, we have Salty Chef! Exact the same principle, just with salt & olive oil. Anyway, Salty Chef was in charge of spinach today 😂
Wine, another Montefalco, was terrificThen it was back to Marcelo’s for some food for the flat next week—check out the huge cheese wheels at the very top right! Marcelo is the third generation of running this very same shop, that’s Mrs Marcelo beside him. Marcelo is wearing his customary down vest because it’s freaking freezing in there with the door propped open!!!
