Wacky random ramblings about wacky random trips

Typical Days in Napoli

The name of this photo is “Irony”
This is the view on our daily hike down into town
The top of this pic is pretty much our roadway winding down into town from the hills above

Our Airbnb is great, big space, patios, INSANE views, but dang is it inconvenient! If we want to walk for food, there are like three meh options, otherwise it’s taxis. Napoli has over a million people but only two metro lines: I am convinced the taxi union has successfully fought expanding the metro for many decades.

Anyway, we hiked all the way down to seaside for lunch, mostly out of habit: I haven’t actually been hungry in DAYS. I just can’t eat this much!!!

We order a caprese salad, and it was excellent. And not too large!

For my lunch, I really only wanted just a handful of mussels and I’m done for the day! So that’s what I ordered…. or, that’s what I thought I ordered.

So yeah the small plate of mussels turned out to be fabulous Seafood Surprise for Six!!!!

OMG wtf keeps happening with the endless piles of food, no matter what we order??? Oh, and I’m on a timer: I need to be back at the Airbnb pretty soon for the stock market open. Sam had ordered a small pizza specifically so we could be quickly out of here.

I manfully put down a few big bites of my seafood extravaganza, and then waited for Sam’s pizza to get here so she could have her lunch and go. But somehow the waitstaff had it in their heads that we wanted to first share the Seafood Surprise and *then* dig into some pizza. So they wait and they wait… we wait and we wait… did I mention Sam pretty much hates seafood?? And by now I am pretty much missing the stock market open yet again, despite getting down here with two hours to spare…

Eventually the pizza did finally land, gotta admit it was excellent… I think I had maybe a single bite?

We had most of it boxed and ended up having it for dinner: I had all of one slice, omg I am still so stuffed!!!!

After dinner we sprawled out and watched part of a wacky Italian game show on TV and then some crime show Sam translated for me, then mercifully bed to try and digest the day.

Morning saw us at the local coffee shop for Breakfast of Flies: I dunno where they all come from but dang they are annoying! Then we wimped out and took a cab into town to try for an early lunch so I can get back to trading on time for once.

After wandering around a bit, we finally found our lunch place but they were already out of room 😢

So we consulted our phones for a plan B, which we settled on a mere twenty minutes away.

Passed by a pretty cool monument on the way
This is a place we briefly ducked into and quickly decided no freaking way
The locals are apparently a lot colder than I am
Ah, this looks more like it!!

The restaurant we picked was very Italian (go figure!) and they had a great menu of classics–Sam set her heart on the handmade ravioli. Unfortunately, the owner/manager/whatever had different ideas: “No! Fish for two!!!” We didn’t really have much say in the matter, he obviously knew what was best for us.

The fish for two was amazing, if HUGE!! It was so big it was gonna take extra time to cook, so they comped us a huge salad… we were picking at it slowly when the big fat waiter or owner or manager or whatever began loudly singing some song, came dancing over, picked up a bottle of olive oil and, holding it way up OVER HIS HEAD, began pouring it out all over our salad and our table! Still singing loudly he eventually slammed the bottle down and waltzed back into the kitchen! Was definitely an Italian moment!!! Omg I ate so much, I had to cover for Sam who doesn’t much like fish (tho she did give it a good try!!)

Desserts, limoncello, grappa, stagger off to find a taxi, try to explain to the driver where the hell our airbnb was, finally make it home… stock market opening long since gone lol but whatever—we’re in Italy, there is no “time”!!

View from lunch: a giant motorcycle, some person literally strapped to the back HOLDING A BABY as they careen through the crowded streets of the Spanish Quarter
