Our amazing Kobe Beef lunch (did I mention in Kobe?!?) was a meal to remember, joining the rarified list of best meals of my life, ever.
It turns out that a chef prepares everything in front of you, on a huge gleaming stainless steel grill. This is nothing like a noisy hibachi meal in the US, with goofy guys slinging food all over and lighting volcanoes. The dining area was nearly silent— think of it as a sanctified alter to beef, the most sombre and serious atmosphere imaginable.

When we left, we were in a bit of a state of shock—despite our sky-high expectations, I hadn’t ever realized that a fairly simply-prepared beef lunch could have been that satisfying. Like I said, this was one of the very best.
Next door to the restaurant is literally a museum dedicated to Kobe beef!

After a bit of meandering around the Osaka streets, we found this microscopic brewery and sampled some of the local beers.

The rest of the evening was pretty low-key as we went back to the hotel for an early night. Before turning in, we somehow both spontaneously said together “if we could repeat this day, it would be perfect!”
