Wacky random ramblings about wacky random trips

Last Night in Sapporo

Cannot believe we’re already having our final Sapporo dinner! But we are, and this one is gonna be a doozie, Death By Sushi lol like a hundred courses of it, all absolutely top-notch.

Took the Sapporo subway for the first time, even did a transfer! Our sushi restaurant was pretty far away, in what seemed like a fairly isolated remote area
This is the modest unassuming entryway, you’d never know it was there!

These meals have to go according to tradition: first you have a bunch of appetizer dishes, then the chef switches to nigiri style for a couple hours. This is eaten with your fingers, and they have a special finger cloth for you to use. Frequently the appetizer part begins with octopus, maybe our least favorite… Robert says no one actually likes it but they have to keep serving it out of tradition 😀

View from my seat

Hah here’s a statue of said fish, with the chef riding it like a cowboy 😀
And there was sake, but oddly it was again really good! Are we turning Japanese?!? Check out the guy at the far left, he was tossing these down effortlessly all night 😀

And I do mean hard-working, quickly assembling these complicated nigiri pieces for eight people as fast as he could, he was always a flurry of activity. Once he mistakenly handed Matt a dish of various sushi toppings rather than the dish to eat: Matt looked at him blankly, mutely wondering “what do I do with this?” The chef looks, does a double take, and quickly swaps out the plates while laughing quite loudly–it was really funny, and the chef seemed to enjoy everyone having a nice laugh! It was a really pleasant relaxed atmosphere there, though maybe it was all the sake 😀

The friendly drinking guy insisted on getting a shot of us!
I love the Japanese but I will never understand their ideas about dessert
We also got a shot of us with our chef!
And then it was time to go…..

What I was unable to convey with all these pictures was how insanely stuffed we were! OMG it’s like an eating marathon… suffice it to say that the boys, in their youthful twenties, made it through a lot easier than I did! But bloated or not, it was really amazing, very much an evening to remember. And friendly talking guy caught up with us outside, turns out he spoke a little English, and hearing that Matt was living in Boston, announced that everyone he knew really hates Tom Brady 😀

On the Sapporo subway heading back to the hotel
Our hotel had a great bar on the 26th floor, so we decided to do some Japanese whiskies!

It was a heck of a day, beginning at the Otaru fish market, then the unbelievable sushi dinner extravaganza, and ending up sipping whiskies on the twenty-sixth floor lol I had a feeling the bed was going to feel extra good that night.
