Day Trip from Sapporo

Today’s first adventure was to first get through the night, then blearily make it to the train station so we could have breakfast at the Otaru fish market!! Because where else would one have breakfast other than at a fish market???

Here’s a helpful graphic on the escalator, warning everyone of the many calamities likely to befall anyone so unwise as to actually take an escalator!

Otaru is a much smaller town than Sapporo, so we were surprised at how crowded the early morning train was

The market has got to be around here somewhere!!

You order everything here through an iPad

We did manage to order breakfast beers!!

Then the freshest sashimi, check out the tongue!!

Of course we had plenty of the other usual stuff: crab, uni, salmon, ikura, etc… in other words a normal breakfast 😀

Some things are not as straight-forward as they should be

Despite how amazing breakfast was, there was still one more task to complete, finally slaying Robert’s Moby Dick: the famous Hairy Crab of Hokkaido, for which he’s been lusting over the past two years!

We have a volunteer! Yup, this is what $85 worth of crab looks like

We choose one, had it weighed & paid, then we were told to wait in a room behind a curtain for fifteen minutes while it was steamed and prepared. The chef cracked everything open for us, all we had to do was pull delicious crab meat out from the cracked shells!
