Wacky random ramblings about wacky random trips

Day in Nara

After our insanely great sushi breakfast in the insane Osaka Fish Market, it was time for further adventures!

Hot vending machine coffee in Osaka
After all this time in Japan, I only just now discovered that you could actually get hot coffee out of a vending machine. Won’t say it was great, but I will say it wasn’t bad either, which is totally good enuf for me first thing in the morning! 😀

Anyway… off to Nara. How to describe this place? The word “overwhelming” is a good one here… Googling “Nara” is worthwhile—it’s an important former capital from around AD 700ish, but everyone today is a bit cagey about how many of the buildings are really historic versus rebuilt.

But when you see it, those details seem a lot less important. OK, maybe a lot of it is only hundreds rather than a thousand years old, whatever.

Nara is bizarrely full of tame deer. I never did look up the history of this, but for whatever reason, there they are.

Nara is also full of school groups trooping through, gotta admit it’s a perfect place for a school field-trip—there were literally swarms of Japanese school children bustling all over.

Robert and I evidently looked so out of place that kids made it a point to loudly say “Hello!” to us. Some of the cheekier kids followed that quickly with “Good-BYE!” and tittered. One child, forth grade maybe?, bravely stepped up to interview us (I suppose for extra credit). After we answered a few rudimentary questions (“What do you like most about Japan?”) she thanked us and gave Robert some origami as a reward. I wish I had photos of this episode but I would feel really weird about taking photos of someone’s kid, let alone posting them online.
