Wacky random ramblings about wacky random trips

Gourmet Night

Who knew there was a Michelin-starred restaurant in Catania of all places?? Our eldest son Robert, that’s who! We’d been looking forward to this for a while, and tonight’s the night, and even better, he’s treating the whole family!

The city adopts a new mysterious aura after dark

And here we are: Sapio in Catania! After the loud hustle & bustle of the streets, this place felt like a sanctuary: calm, quiet, and delicious!

The restaurant had a very demur ambiance which my phone’s camera totally couldn’t deal with, so I had to crank up the brightness on most of the following pictures–it took me a while to improve them enough to even post! So if some look washed out, that’s why.

Oh, and check out the centerpieces! The tall items are breadsticks with an incredible flavor, and the smaller pieces are various crackers. The black thing in the center? We guessed it was a big piece of pumice from Mt Etna, seemed very fitting!

And so it begins…. mysteriously!
The second course came hanging on an actual olive tree lol (also note that the fizzy white wine cork gets its own place of honor)
This is a spread to use on the different breads they laid out
Breads going around… lol this meal has barely begun, if I had known what all was coming, I would have tried to skip the bread completely even though they were so good
Shrimp tartar if memory serves… raw shrimp has been kind of a theme this trip for some reason
I believe this is another raw shrimp extravaganza
Can’t quite remember this one but I do recall that the flavor was wonderfully intense
This was all just such a good time!
Of course ya gotta have a pasta course!
Another palette cleanser of some sort
And we are allowed a slight break, the table has been all cleared except for the Mt Etna lava chunk
The start of dessert

The meal has been a fantastic experience in every way, but Europeans being Europeans, you know all kinds of crazy is going to break out for dessert. And we weren’t disappointed, it was suddenly full-on European dessert insanity… absolutely nothing about it makes any sense, despite a speech beforehand explaining the incredible depths of thought which had gone into it all… thoughts which apparently didn’t involve taste, flavor, or enjoyment 😂 Somehow it just got funnier and funnier, as more and more bizarre items showed up.

These are goodies which came after the serious dessert items, all the petit fours were amazing, I guess just to underline the fact that they can make great afters, they just purposefully choose not to!
This, perhaps the world’s smallest raspberry pie, took me immediately back to my Mom’s kitchen: so intense, so legit!!

This amazing dinner is nearly finished… four hours in!

But then, in a moment that took me so by surprise that I couldn’t take a picture, the head waiter shocked us by grabbing a large mallet and smashing the Mt Etna lava piece!

BOOM!!!! It was a very Monty Python moment 😀

As it turns out, it was NOT a piece of lava: it was a sugar-based creation of the restaurant’s in which were hidden some final candies (on the off chance anyone was still hungry)!!!

It was a pretty dramatic end to a pretty amazing meal. Four hours worth of surprises, laughter, AMAZING wines which I somehow forgot to take pictures of… and I’m still not sure I’ll ever be hungry again, wow what a feast! I would totally do this again some day, it was an experience to remember!
