Not the most auspicious beginning to what I hope will end up as an “interesting” travel blog, but hey who doesn’t love Cancun? Yeah it’s somewhat boring, predictable, even cliche maybe, but on the other hand those were the exact qualities we were looking for on this trip.
I’d spent most of 2023 enjoying cancer treatment, and so we wanted somewhere close, warm, easy to get to, easy to deal with. We found direct flights from Cincinnati (!!) and when we landed and breathed in all that heady humid salty sea air, and immediately bought two beers from the guys cruising all the tourists waiting for their hotel shuttles, we knew we’d chosen properly. No fuss, no muss, no jet-lag, no problem!
We stayed at the Grand Kempinski at a pretty great “introductory fare.” The hotel was apparently changing over from being the Ritz Carleton, and to attract suspicious travelers back to the property (now sporting a dubious new name) they were charging very attractive limited-time prices. Oh darn!
I regret to say that we were very very boring on this trip, we hardly ever left the property. In fairness, we’d already been to pretty much every day-trip possible from Cancun, and few of them are worth a repeat.
I just loved this place. It was calm & quiet–thirty years ago I would have been quite disappointed by those qualities!! But this time we were ourselves both quiet and boring, and pretty much content to park our asses down on the beach and just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Oh, and eat, of course!

So yeah, a very dull boring trip, quite literally just what the doctor ordered, and we loved every second of it. For sure the laziest trip we’d ever taken!
Flying out, we went literally directly over the Hotel Zone… if memory serves, that’s Club Med at the very bottom of this pic, but we haven’t been there in years and years.
